Sure, the name — Joy Bombs — stood out.
But there was more to the edibles product that Nimble Distro co-founder and CEO Joy Hudson spotted on a "scouting trip" of New Mexico cannabis shops with Marissa Rodriguez, the Milwaukie company's co-founder and chief operating officer.
"They said it had a very familiar form factor that you're going to recognize," Hudson recalled. "So I bought one bag. I went outside and poured them into my hands. I was like, 'Wow.' I put a couple in my mouth, and I walked back into the shop and bought out their stock."
Now Nimble is making Joy Bombs in Oregon, marking a move into the edibles category for the successful distributor that's also behind the popular Kites pre-rolls brand.
"It's a big deal for us, but also, I think, for the Oregon industry," Hudson said. "The edibles segment of cannabis has sat at 13% (market share) forever. There are only so many gummies you can make. Joy Bombs is the first really innovative product that I believe is going to move the needle from 13%."
A couple of things are different about Joy Bombs, which the company Joyibles originated in Colorado before finding manufacturing partners in Massachusetts and New Mexico ahead of Oregon.
There's that "familiar form factor" that Hudson referenced. She couldn't use the name, but with a candy shell over a chewy fruit center, it has Skittles written all over it. That separates Joy Bombs from a vast world of soft, gelatin-based gummies.
"It's one of the only edibles that is so stable you can put these in your car for a month in August and they're not going to change taste, they're not going to melt, they're not going to be ruined," Hudson said.
